Trekking is a popular activity for adventure seekers, offering the opportunity to explore the great outdoors while challenging oneself physically and mentally. Here are the top 20 tips for a successful trekking expedition:
- Get in shape: Trekking requires a good level of physical fitness, so it’s important to start training well in advance of your trip. Focus on cardio and strength training to build endurance and muscle strength. Trekking in Pakistan varies in difficulty but it’s always a little harder when you are out of shape.
- Plan your route: Research your trekking route and be aware of the terrain and conditions you’ll be facing. Make sure you have a detailed map and a compass, and know how to use them. The guys we work with on the ground are absolutely excellent at briefing and will always be at your side.
- Get the right gear: Invest in good quality gear, including hiking boots, a backpack, a waterproof jacket, a warm hat, gloves and some additional layers. It can be warm at night but as soon as that sun goes down, you’ll feel the cold creep in pretty quick and be happy with the extra layers you brought.
- Bring enough water: Trekking can be physically demanding, so it’s important to bring enough snacks and water to sustain you throughout the trip. Pack high-energy snacks like nuts and dried fruit, and bring a litre of water for every hour you think you will be trekking uphill.
- Wear the right clothing: Dress in layers, so you can easily adjust to changing temperatures. Bring a waterproof jacket, a warm hat, and gloves, and make sure you have comfortable, moisture-wicking clothing. A large jacket might seem like a great idea but can be too warm until its freezing.
- Learn basic first aid: Be prepared for emergencies by learning basic first aid skills and bringing a first aid kit. Make sure you know how to treat blisters, cuts, and other common injuries. Our guys on the ground are experts at bringing groups trekking in Pakistan and have everything on hand but it will always help to know the basics yourself.
- Be aware of the weather: Ask the trekking guides before you leave and be prepared for the weather conditions you’ll be facing. Bring enough warm clothing and a waterproof jacket. Trekking in the rain is one way to get run down. Make sure to get dry as soon as possible after.
- Bring a headlamp: It’s essential to have a headlamp or flashlight with you at all times, in case you need to navigate in the dark. There will often be power outages and you will be in areas where there is no civilisation at all. Going to the toilet will be challenging without one.
- Tell someone if you wanted: Make sure someone knows your itinerary and expected return time, in case of emergency. If you stay with a group you are much safer than if you wander alone and can’t find your way back.
- Respect the environment: Leave no trace and pack out all of your trash. Be mindful of the impact you are having while being in the area. At times you will see local Pakistani’s who might litter, although not your job to educate the locals, set an example by collecting the rubbish to bin later.
